The Chain Theatre - now based in midtown Manhattan near Times Square - announced that it is seeking playwrights from underrepresented communities for 2019.
The goal of the lab is to support diverse and underrepresented voices in the American Theatre. "The Chain has offered similar labs in the past. but this is the first lab of its kind at our new location," says The Chain's Christina Perry.
The application is open to all NYC based playwrights/artists that are a part of an underrepresented community in the arts. Female identifying, persons of color, LGBTQ, and trans artists are encouraged to submit. Plays must be at least 70 pages and a completed draft. Must be full length plays. Both new and established playwrights are encouraged to apply.
Plays selected will receive 4-6 weeks of development that end in two invited staged readings at the Chain Theatre. Playwrights will meet with actors one day a week and the Chain creative team a second time during the week during the 4-6 week intensive. All plays are in consideration for full production for the Chain Theatre 2020 season.
There is no cost to the playwrights or participants. The only requirement is that the playwright commit time to dedicate to this lab. This is a lab for the playwright based around the playwright. Seeking writers who are collaborative and open to working with another company.
This program has been made possible with the support of New York Department of Cultural Affairs.
