"Sgt. Stubby: The Great American War Dog Musical" is A Bright New Offering at St. Luke’s Theatre, Off Broadway.

December 2, 2016

"Sgt. Stubby," the new musical written and directed by Jack Dyville (books and lyrics) and brought to you by The Fact Theatre Company, NYC, with music and lyrics by Lawrence Wankel is cheerful, cute, inspiring and certainly worthwhile choice for family audiences and adults alike. It opens December 3rd.

Based on a true story, “Sgt. Stubby: The Great American War Dog Musical’  is an adorable stray Boston Terrier that l captures the hearts of a group of soldiers who are about to ship off during World War II. The charming Stubby, played by the charismatic Matt Weinstein (making his Off Broadway debut) is a nameless pup living in an alley in Connecticut with a pack of other stray dogs who manages to grab the attention of the soldiers. Breaking the rules, they sneak him onto the ship and Stubby is off on his adventure. As it turns out, Stubby wins everyone over and is soon in the heart of combat, using his snout to sniff out soldiers during combat and leading the other soldiers to find them, capturing German soldiers, fighting mustard gas, and in the process making him a war hero.

However, in spite of his popularity and success, it is against the rules for a service pet to return home after his service. You’ll have to take your kids to see what happens.

Music and dancing were highly enjoyable and endearing and the cast (many in dog costume) really come alive, bringing their character and personality to new heights.

The story is heartwarming and patriotic and enjoyable. The cast gives it its all. The choreography (by Darin Chumbley) was delightful, but the music and singing were hurt by sound issues that made the songs difficult to understand.

We strongly recommend Stubby for the holiday season at the St. Luke’s Theatre.

Running Time: 90 minutes, with no intermission.

“Sgt. Stubby: The Great American War Dog Musical” plays every week on Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm through January 7, 2017 at St. Luke’s Theatre in New York City.
